I hadn't smoked in the past, I (have) just started.
jest równoważne w tym przypadku zdaniu:
I didn't smoke in the past, I (have) just started.

Nie użyjemy w pierwszej części czasu Present Perfect, czyli:
I haven't smoked in the past, I (have) just started.
