I took me some time to do the research as lesson 22 is dedicated to Future Simple tense and the sentence is Past Simple.
Anyway, the sentence is an example for "work as somebody" and not necessary must be relevant to the current level of the course.
However I think it would be better if at that level the example sentence was "I worked as a mechanic for a while".

Nie wiem, która to konkretnie lekcja i w jakim kursie, ale wersja "I did work as a mechanic for a while" jest poprawna w znaczeniu "Ja naprawdę pracowałem/pracowałam przez jakiś czas jako mechanik". W tego typu zdaniu mamy do czynienia z tzw. emfazą, czyli uwypukleniem faktu, o jakim mówimy.
Oczywiście zdanie "I worked as a mechanic for a while" jest jak najbardziej poprawne, ale bez tego zabarwienia emocjonalnego.
