the same difference as between "stand" and "stand up"

Normalnie jest takie rozróżnienie:

sit - siedzieć
sit down - usiąść

stand - stać
stand up - wstać

lie - leżeć
lie down - położyć się

To dla mnie oznacza, że te drugie z każdej pary oznaczają pewną czynność, są to czasowniki ruchu (co jest zaznaczone przez użycie przy nich przyimka kierunku), a te pierwsze oznaczają pewien stan, położenie.

Ale ostatnio kilka razy spotkałam się w pewnym podręczniku z użyciem "sit down" jako siedzieć i "lie down" jako leżeć.
Może coś miało być w ten sposób podkreślone?

usiąść = sit (down)

He came over and sat (down) beside her.
Please, sit (down).
Before he sat down, he unbuttoned his jacket. (here, "sat" without "down" would be possible, but unusual)

In short, "sit down" is safer. "Sit" alone is less common and more formal.


siedzieć = sit

The cat was sitting on the fence. (not: sitting down)

Sometimes, "to be sitting down" is used in this sense in informal English. This seems to occur when we want to focus the listener on the sitting.

Are you sitting (down)? I've got some bad news. (here, the focus is on the sitting)
I'm sitting in my car, listening to the radio. (here, the sitting is just background information)
